The things you find in your house

Well this is a first for me!! I have had bats, ants, scorpions, spiders, flies, and even a small garter snake, in the house-- but this beats them all.

7 baby ducklings came to visit!!

Now what do I do with them, (and don't tell me to eat them)

Correction-- 8 ducklings are here. Went into the kitchen just now to get a drink, and abra cadabra
ANOTHER ONE appeared from behind the freezer.

This better stop soon, I'm running out of room in the wash tub!!!

Anyone want a pet duck?

Are you posting this from LM or ???? What kind of ducks? They are precocial (sp) so you won't have to feed them by hand.

How unusual and fun. Those are Black-Bellied Whistling Tree Ducks chicks. Beautiful patterning. They breed along the coast. Good luck!

These ducks nest in tree cavities. Have any trees fallen around your place? Maybe their nest was destroyed. Tough to keep them safe outside with the dogs, but I imagine the parents are close by and could retrieve them.
Too adorable!

Yes, here in La Manz Tim.

Thanks Gail for the article and identifying them.

I guess I'll put the dogs in their pen and figure out where to put the ducklings out side safely.
Maybe the parents will hear them, they are vocal, lol.

With keep you all posted on this story as it unfolds.

The parents of these little chicks mate for life and are hopefully close by. Although able to eat on their own, they will remain vulnerable to predictors. As their guardian, they will now look to you for guidance and protection. I work up here in N. California with wildlife rehab which is both rewarding and time consuming with the little ones. If you can provide them with a small body of water that they can safely access, they'd be super happy.

Female usually lays 12 to 16 whitish eggs, one per day. Incubation lasts about 12 to 16 days, shared by both parents. Precocial chicks are yellow with black spots. They leave the nest very soon after hatching, within two days, and they are able to feed themselves. But they remain with parents for up to two months. At this time, they can fly. However, they may remain in family groups for up to six months.
This species produces only one brood per season, sometimes two if first is lost.

DIET:
Black-bellied Whistling-Duck feeds mainly on plant matter, aquatic plants, grass and grain. It also consumes insects and molluscs.

Hi Patti...the best thing right now would be to try and locate the parents or if the pen you have is open for the parents to access them, I would put them in there?? Oh boy...I've done work with wildlife rescue in Vancouver and this can be very time consuming...but well worth it.

Gail, thanks for that very informative article.

I'm happy to say that the little ones have started to eat. I soaked a corn based tortilla, mashed it up then sprinkled a little bit of corn flake crumbs in with it. There is also some grass in the tub with them and I make sure that they have plenty of fresh water. I was at a loss as to what to feed them, I know commercial chicken feed can kill them.

I also have a lamp going to keep them warm.

They seem to be content, and are grooming themselves and each other.

There has been no sign of the parents at all.

So for now, I will continue to do all that I can and hope for the best

These beautiful ducks can be seem flying around La Manz and nesting in any big trees they can find. A huge reason to save our big trees.
Good Job Patti . You might have feathered friends for life.

update on the ducks

Well it is now Day 5 of "Duck Tales" and there is good news and sad news.

Unfortunately the two littlest ducklings have not survived. For those of you folks that have raised chicks, or domestic ducks, you understand. Some times the others in the brood will accidently smother them, or "worry" them to death.

But, the remaining 6 are doing as well as can be expected in such a small area. They eat like little pigs. I have been giving them a mixture of mashed corn tortillas, lettuce, a bit of broccoli, and cooked oatmeal. The most challenging part of all is trying to keep them clean, dry and warm.

Remember folks--what goes in, must come out, lol, and it ain't pretty!! Also they always end up
tipping their water dish. I have put a towel in the bottom of tub, so that they do have a dry corner to sleep in under the lamp. But this needs to be changed daily, and I had no water in my house for 2 days--that was fun!

Anyway, the is a really good ending coming up to this story. A young man here in La Manz, who has studied conservation in both here in Mexico and in Canada & the US is setting up a place for these little guys to have a permenant home.

So stay tuned, and will update on their progress.

Thank you Patti for looking after the little sweeties. They obviously think that you're their mum now. At least you'll have ongoing contact with them when they move to their new home.
