Auto Legalization

Perhaps some good new for those expats that become permanent residents with cars that need to be nationalized. I was going to wait to spread the news once I got through the process myself but I couldn't wait. Is this fair, not sure but at least there will be some support while I trudge through.

It seems that through a citizen's group, Onappafa, we should be able to legalize our vehicles without going to the border and from a computer. Also, perhaps as early as November of this year, we can even legalize Japanese, German, and other foreign made cars (no Korean).

Sounds too good and I'm in mid-process now with about 10 days to go. At that point I'm supposed to receive a document which allows me to go and get my plates in La Huerta. And no, I will not escape going to Autlan for the Auto check. The price is about $150 dollars more than if I had gone to the border. But I believe that all the fees have gone up as of October with the reorganzation of agents at the border.

Also, there is a $1,400 peso membership fee to join Onappafa, Organizacion Nacional de Proteccion al Patrimonio Familiar.

I hope the Corruptor bus doesn't end up visiting my house . I'll let you know the results, Cruz

Cruz,
I went back to temporary residence status from permanent in order to keep my Japanese vehicle. I would love to learn more about this before I renew in the next 30 days. Please let me know if there is a good source of information on line for this. Thanks for sharing the good news!

Hola Michelle. At some point we may want to speak to Aldo Gomez Perez to see what he can tell us on the timing. So far things have been slower than initially presented.

However, Onappafa can give you a temporary plate which can be used in Jalisco while you wait for the legalization process for foreign vehicles to begin.

I have my fingers crossed on all of this. Mr. Gomez wants to do a public meeting in January for La Manzanilla to give people information and perhaps begin the process for whomever wants/needs it. Cruz

ONAPPAFA clearly is a program designed to help common (poor) Mexicans who cannot afford Aduana’s official import fees. When “supposedly rich” gringo expats try to take advantage of an extra-legal program designed to help poor Mexicans, will the expats be given the same public protection when authorities choose to enforce the law?

Hola Sparks. A good question. We'll have to ask Onappafa if expats will receive the same 'treatment'.

You're right that one should go the 'legal' route
as this saves problems down the line or at least that is what we hope given this system.

Onappafa supposedly is going the legal route through a side door they opened through the judicial system after being rebuffed by the legislative one. They have done this, I think, through numbers. One ends up with plates and on the National vehicle registers, Soia and Repuve.

And this 'side door' was originally designed to serve the indigent. However, Onappafa now recognizes that Expats have been treated unfairly when on becoming permanent residents they have to legalize their cars or keep renewing visas for them at the border. The Expat is welcome but their cars are not because the two departments, Aduana and Immigration, did not coordinate the procedure to accommodate keeping one's car without a lot of hassle. I think a mechanism should have been engineered to grandfather in their vehicles.

I choose to think that Onappafa is acting because of this unfairness and not because they now have another group to serve/exploit. I'm sure they make some $ in the process. All I know for sure is that I don't have to drive my u-haul to the border and back just to get legalized.

What I am worried about is transacting by e-mail with people that I don't see. How do I know where my $ is going and if I'll get results. Where do I go if it doesn't work. So far so good but I'm a guinea pig on this one. Cruz
