health foods in La Manzanilla

Posted by Shann Weston on October 20, 2014, 6:10 pm

Hello, we are coming to La Manzanilla for the winter and wonder about the availability of certain special foods:

Plain yogurt
ground (good) coffee
sauerkraut
nuts--esp walnuts
quinoa
brown rice
cocoanut oil

I know about the store in Melaque. Just wondering if any of these might be available in town. Thanks!

Whatever you have problems finding, Robert (our deli man) can find it for you in PV. We really can get it all now. Maybe Saurkraut will be a bit difficult. Bring some quinoa with you. Easy. Coffee is amazing in Mexico.

I've seen quinoa in Lidia's grocery (spelled kinoa) next to the brown rice, neither is always available but she does work to make us happy. Almonds and pecans are frequently available, sometimes shelled pistachios, and a variety of seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, and sesame are the easiest to find). I've seen walnuts in Melaque but hesitate to buy them because of how easily walnuts go rancid in this heat. Let me know if you've had a good experience, will you?
I'm told one can buy plain yogurt in quart containers, but have not done so myself as I'm vegan.

Linda Mandala sells coconut oil in most of the stores and at the weekly market. It's slightly cheaper to buy straight from her. Of course you can ask any questions you might have about the oil - and perhaps develop more resources for better food-buying.

There's also a deli next to the tortilleria that's open short hours and has interesting things like fresh tofu and spices, but I haven't been in this year. Much of it isn't in my diet so I don't go often.

I'm not paid by anyone, just a foodie that likes to share info.

Good luck!

The deli is open 6 days a week (closed Wedneday) all year 'round from around 8 am until 6 pm.

Huh. Either they expanded their hours from last year, or I usually look for them on Wednesdays. Thanks for the info!

I guess you've gone there on Wednesdays because they have always had those hours I posted.

You can get really delicious,(organic) 'NO BULLSHIT', Mexican coffee; fresh-roasted right here in La Manzanilla...available, as well, at popular grocery stores in Melaque, Shann.

Previous years that I've tried bringing quinoa down it gets confiscated at the airport. Probably, best to try buying locally.

It's very easy to make your own sauerkraut, there are recipes online that explain the process. The cabbage is so fresh and cheap in our area that I always have a batch in the fridge. (After it's fermented.)
