La Manzanilla Secondary School needs more organic seeds and trimming scissors

Posted by Dave Collins on October 22, 2014, 6:10 pm

If anyone coming down this way is inclined to bring along some organic seeds (for most any kind of vegetable and/or herbs--legal ones of course;-), and trimming scissors for arugula, lettuce, kale, etc. Tierralegre and the students and teachers of La Manzanilla Secondary School would be most grateful. We are in need of these items for our school garden project, AKA the "YES" (Youth Ecology & Sustainability) Initiative.

Thanks in advance for your consideration and kindness!

Wow, MUCHÍSIMAS GRACIAS, Jennifer and Lopez Island School!!! We are extremely grateful for this generous gift.

Also, following up on several questions I´ve received from potential seed and trimmer donations, we´re looking for organic seeds for different varieties of lettuce, kale, arugula, bok choy, Swiss chard, spinach, dill, oregano, basil, etc., but we won´t turn anything down. It´s pretty incredible the variety you can plant here in the winter months!

Also, regarding the seeds, for those of you concerned about bringing seeds down to Mexico on the plane, car, etc., we will start a fund here which we will use to buy organic seeds from our providers in Mexico, and we will provide receipts of all purchases for all donors.

The clippers, however, are harder to find down here. Here´s an example of what we´re looking for: http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-9921-Softouch-Micro-Tip-Pruning/dp/B00004SD76/ref=sr_1_2?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1414101050&sr=1-2&keywords=gardening+clippers

They don´t have to be this same model by any means.

Finally, since it´s likely we may receive more seeds than we can use in La Manzanilla school garden with the students, Tierralegre would like to make seeds available for those who would like to grow their own plot within the school garden (first come first serve relative to available space, which is limited). And, if there are still seeds left over, then we would like to make some available to the other 6 schools we are working with in the municipality of La Huerta where we have also set up school gardens if that´s O.K. with seed donors. We have already purchased many seeds, but our budget is limited and we recently realized that we need more seeds and clippers.

¡MUCHAS GRACIAS!

What do you know about bringing seeds to Mexico? I think they may be on the no-no list. Does customs care?

I can bring some.

Thanks!
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the offer! I think you may be correct, which is why I suggested the seed fund to buy them down here for those who are not comfortable bringing them down, but would like to help with the campaign.

I think that if customs finds them then they just confiscate them, but I´m not completely certain.

Any other questions, please let me know.

Just to clarify on the trimmer request: we´re looking for 10 trimmers for the La Manzanilla school garden and 15 more for the other six school gardens.

If I get a confirmation from people re. how many they are planning to bring down, then that would be great so that I can keep track.

Thanks!

When would you ideally like to have these scissors by, Dave? I'm happy to pack one in our suitcase when we come down the first week of February, but would that be too late? If it's not, then you can add my name to your list for one.

Hmmm... wait a minute, here... Maybe I'll just put it on mom and dad's "xmas stocking stuffer list" this year - kids always want one from us... hmmm... so with 4 kids (all adults!) and if I ask them all for one, net outlay of funds becomes zero... hmmm... change my order to 4, Dave! Santa's coming early this year (well, late actually) jejeje

I'll be looking here with breathless anticipation for your next update on the "trimming scissors count". Such fun...

Concerning bringing seeds into Mexico, they do seem to be on the list of items regulated from import (no surprise as they are for most countries). I would strongly suggest that all refrain from even thinking of importing seeds of any kind (except maybe dill and other packaged spices/seeds which are allowed by what it says on the attached). As a trained biologist, who at one time worked with insects in biological control, I understand fully that the implications could be dire if certain unwanted insects/pathogens/diseases were inadvertently hitching a ride on any of these seeds you bring with you and manage to sneak in. Chances are slim, I know, and I think a lot of vegetable seeds might even be treated, not sure on that, though. Still, these rules are not to be trifled with lightly. Even if you were to get caught and only have your "wrists slapped", as I think happens with many unknowing travellers, it's not at all a wise practice. Better to donate to the seed fund as Dave suggests.

Jeez, I hope the seeds that the kids from Lopez Island sent DO get through customs...

Hey Senor Collins... Just wondering how the effort is proceeding. I also wasn't sure if you still need the 4 trimming scissors I'm willing to bring down, but I asked above if early Feb. was too late. Si o no? Besides this serves as a good excuse to "bump" this subject...
