I am looking for a 1-bedroom or studio lodging for January. I will be coming from Oaxaca to soak up the beach and sun. Need small kitchen, comfortable bed, light and quiet because I am working on a book project. $500 max --- less even better for me.

The apartment below mine is currently available, $5000 pesos per month for a 1-bedroom with two full-size beds. It has a kitchen (stove, dishes, cookware, refri), 3/4 bath, ceiling fans, window screens, TV, cable, solar hot water, cable Internet, washing machine, secure parking, lockable gate, motion-sensitive outside light, and in a generally quiet and safe neighbourhood.
We're two blocks south of the arroyo at calles Puerto Melaque and 31 de Octubre, so, not exactly close to the centre of town or the beach, but the streets are flat, the walk is easy, and the distance really helps with the noise. One could also rent a bicycle. There's a little tienda at the end of the block and larger ones near the zocalo. The building is owned by a Guadalajaran couple who are nearing retirement, who have family here, and who absolutely adore La Manzanilla. When they're here, there is sometimes construction on the upper fourth apartment, but it's not constant and timing is negotiable. The lady has been teaching me Spanish in a thoroughly enjoyable way, and the man plays Spanish guitar. Friendly folks.
