Rental cars

I understand that if I drive in Mexico, and I get in an accident, I'm guilty even if the accident wasn't my fault...is this correct?

We've been coming to La Manz and area for several years each winter and have never rented a car. Does anyone know of a reasonable rental place in the area? Any tips and tricks related to car renting? Thanks.

Responding to your first question, you are not deemed automatically guilty, but without a liability insurance policy, you will be taken into custody until the authorities sort things out.

Thus, the suggestion to secure a Mexican insurance policy is a very valid one.

Best wishes.

You might want to check with your credit card company because some members are automatically covered for a 2 wk period as long as you decline the car companies insurance.
If you are flying into Manzanillo you should check with the rental co. at the airport or in Manzanillo. Some airports do have cheaper rates.
Also check with your insurance company about driving a rental and sometimes they offer extra coverage. If it is your own car you definitely need Mx. Insurance. I do not know about the Cash payment because most rentals want you to use a credit card in case you do not bring the car back.

most likely your credit card nor your personal car insurance will cover you for the liability in MX. They will cover you for the damage to the car IF you don't get the coverage from the renal agency.

The liability coverage is usually more than the car itself depending on the time of year you rent. One would be foolish or have a direct line to God to take the chance to NOT have the liability.

I have never used the guys in Barra do I can't comment. We now have a nice smaller, newer Toyota for 3 weeks. the car was $250 and the insurance $400.

That insurance cost is more than we pay for the full year. We live here full time.

It is more than I pay in CA and more than I paid for the entire year when we had a MX car......
I'd be forever indebted to you if you could show me how to rent a car here and get liability here for less.

I wonder if it would be worth a call to Crazy Cactus in Barra and compare rates. Quite the scam charging that much. Where did you rent from?

Rent from Crazy Cactus, they are terrific. Everything is included, including the liability insurance, and you will know the total cost before you arrive.

We have rented several times at ZLO, and you will not know the total cost until you are at the counter. There are many arguments there. In rough numbers, the quoted rate for the rental was ~$15USD per day for the car, the insurance was ~$40USD per day. (Estimated on-line as ~$15USD per day).

My US insurance agent said to GET THE INSURANCE, GET THE INSURANCE, GET THE INSURANCE. Your credit card company has very limited coverage, and without true liability coverage, you go to jail.

We have rented cars in the past and our credit card company did say they covered us renting a car where ever we used the card. We made them send us a contract by e-mail before arriving at the airport so we knew actually what the cost was going to be for renting the car. Always check a head and have something on paper.

Crazy Cactus is the only place to rent from. We have rented from them at least 3 times. Good cars, everything is included in the price, and nice people to deal with.
