why would a drug cartel want to murder student teachers who were demonstrating against the government withdrawal from financial assistance to education?

The article tells the story: corruption. The kind that Mexicans have to deal with daily, even in our little town.
The Mayor of Iguala ordered the Police to shoot and arrest the students, who then handed them over to the gang, who killed them. The Federales and the Army stood by and did nothing.
There are now massive demonstrations all over the country about this massacre - everyone is talking about it. Some say this will bring down Peņa Nieto.

I guess I don't get it.
It is coming up tourist season. People google, then see this story and then see the phrase "our town" -- and, then would immediately move on to a new vacation destination...where there is no violence/ corruption.
Anyone that wants Mexican news can read any number of news sources that have covered this horrible, gruesome event in both Spanish and English.
Why here?

True, if this message board is only for tourists and commercial operations.
We don't live in a vacuum here.
This is the biggest story to hit the country of Mexico in years.

Oops, sorry all you Carol's out there, I slipped up there by not asking for
