I took this picture of the insect (moth, bug, butterfly etc.) and am wondering what kind it is.

Thanks,

Hi Pam. Such a gorgeous specimen - the hue of that orange is electric... So, I'm working on finding out what this is through a submission to BAMONA. I'm pretty sure that it's a moth, by the way. And with the stubby wings, it might be a flightless female. Anyways, hope to have an answer for you within a few days if all goes well.

Thanks Pablo. I await your response. I happened to be there when it was hatching so I have a series of pictures while it is coming out of its coccoon. It was extremely exciting. Thanks,

De nada, Pam. So magical to be around when a big moth or butterfly emerges from it's metamorphosis, especially one so unique as this one. Would really love to see more of the photos you took - could you post them? And also, would you happen to know the tree/plant that it was on? This is info that BAMONA asks for, if it's known - it can be very valuable in making an identification and also adds to the natural history base. This is like CSI La Manz., Entomology Division...

Yes, please Pam. Being an entomology buff, I would love to see them. I once was blessed to watch a dragon fly to it's metamorphous, crawl up and reed as a pupa, stretch itself out of the shell and fly away. It took an hour and a half. Stunning experience.

Here are the pictures that I took. I found it on a rock on our deck at the back of the rental house we were at.

Pam, thanks for the new photos of the "event". I've forwarded one of these on to BAMONA to add to the file I started with them. Fingers crossed that someone there knows this species...

Hey Tim, you're right that there are big variations in some insect species, but in the case, I'm fairly certain that this moth is not the Hieroglyphic Moth that David posted a few days back. I'm strongly tempted to say that it belongs to the family Saturniidae, but stay tuned as I hope to enlighten one and all with an ID before too long.
