Rainy Art Walk?

Sorry for the bad news all you Art Walkers (and Art Show-ers): There is a decent chance of rain today. It's sprinkling right now, in case anyone needs to go outside and cover anything.

The usual GOES-West IR satellite loop has been broken since yesterday (for me at least.) Here is a substitute loop (you can zoom in on Mexico by clicking the "zoom" button, then click repeatedly on Mexico): http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/tpac/flash-avn.html

The latest TRMM satellite picture (from 6-7 hours ago) shows significant showers well offshore that correspond with the heaviest colors on the GOES loop: http://trmm.gsfc.nasa.gov/trmm_rain/americas/americas_3hrly_zoom.gif

None of my other forecasting sites predicted this rain. I can't say how much to expect or exactly when. Hopefully it won't add up to much. I'll try to let you know whenever the next TRMM data update is posted.

Here's the latest TRMM data update (from 5 hours ago):

The heavier showers were still approaching us (maybe about 150 miles away) when this data was captured and processed. This data raises the chance that we will get some measurable rain in the next few hours. Sorry!

Next TRMM update will be about 11AM. I'll post it if I'm home then.

That link from David is even better for focusing on the cloud movements in the local vicinity. Just remember to manually refresh that web page to make sure it's not showing old data frames (in Internet Explorer and Firefox the most reliable way to force a refresh is to press and hold the "Ctrl" key while pressing the "F5" function key, then release both. The refresh/reload button in both these browsers doesn't always work on this web page.)

All the IR loops show the heavy colors easing up toward blue in the last hour or so.

That's what the cloud-top temperatures are saying, but what about the nearly direct sensing of falling rain as measured by the TRMM satellite? The latest TRMM data refresh is posted and it's a little puzzling:

It shows significant rains with possibly a heavy rainstorm just offshore from us (< 50 miles?) This data is up to 5 hrs old, so this rain should have already come ashore. But the "ground truth" here right now is that the sprinkles ended an hour ago and the sky is lightening up. Did the TRMM rainstorm just miss us to the south? Will the rest of the TRMM-sensed rain continue to come our way?

I can't say for sure. But if we don't get soaked during today's event, that's fine with me!

PS, here is a little 3-frame animated GIF of the TRMM data (cropped to our area):

We dodged the rain for the Art Walk!

Those few sprinkles we have had since yesterday morning have not added up to anything I can measure in my new & improved rain gauge (soup can.) It's been just enough to make mud spots on the car.

The weather resources on the web show the chance of rain diminishing today.

Now back to weather man hibernation...

PS, aren't we glad not to be in the northeast US today?
