onion identification please

Posted by Siki on March 1, 2015, 1:09 am

Hi La Manzanilla! We are back north daydreaming about your lovely sunsets, friendly people, galavanting crocs and well, the onions. I am hoping to post an image of the ones I'd like identified but basically they are the small, flat-ish, oval ones that roast up so nicely.

We just fell in love with them and I did get a name 'Cebolla Taquera' but that hasn't helped me identify them. You see, we are wondering if we can grow them here this summer.

so here's hoping the image loads and that someone has more information on these.

cheers!

They are better known as cebollitas cambray.

Hmm...the ones I'm looking for are the ones that aren't sold with the greens attached and are very mild. When I call up images of cebolitas chambray on google they all look rounder than the ones I was buying in Mexico .

Once we bought the ones with the green stems on them hoping they might be the same but they were very 'bitey' , more like green onions.

Are the Cebolitas chambray very mild and sweet when cooked?

thanks for your help

Yes they are!
Some of them are not round, maybe when they are babyes. We also call them "cebollitas para asar" (little onions to grill).

Thanks for your help Paul, I have searched a bit and while the translation 'green onion' doesn't seem to match what I'm looking for I've heard others refer to them in English as Pearl Onions.
If anyone out there has tried growing Pearl Onions in search of the local taste I'd like to hear if it worked.

cheers!
