Art Walk, continued . . . .

Folks seemed to want to sum up and close out on Carol's earlier message. With 37 postings this is obviously a topic needing further discussion. Some of those who see themselves as "The establishment" may want to limit others with a different point of view, may I politely say bullshit!

Those same folks who see Art Walk as "cast in stone", "never to change", "good as it gets", are missing out on a load of collective knowledge. Most of the participating artists are well seasoned veterans of showing and presenting their works at public venues, only a fool would want to close the conversation before they are heard in full.

Rather than limiting the discussion, if we indeed have until Dec. 1st, open the topic up until a consensus can be reached. Include a ballot with the sign up documents if you must, but allow the participants to shape and guide the program. The alternative is gradual decline and shrinking participation as dis-gruntled folks drop out from frustration.

I for one, would like to see the program expanded. Two days for a show is pretty normal, not everyone is open both days, artists choice. Additionally, how about using the Casino as a central venue where small displays and late arrivals can set up shop. Expand the offering with a few food vendors at the Casino, chairs for the tired souls needing a break, and music to entertain those hubbies not willing to trudge up and down the hills in Lamanz. Furthermore, a concentrated effort should be made to include Native Artisans and their work, unless this is really a closed "Club" afraid of a little change.

Thats my Dos Centavos, Rojo

I agree- the Casino would be a great venue and perhaps the art walk could be changed to " La Manzaniilla Arts and Crafts Festival", because theoretically that is what it has become.

I agree that there have been many good suggestions: Casino, Ejido hall, jardin, food, entertainment, rest-your-fanny chairs set about, two days (lots of extra work for artists setting up and breaking down twice)--much food for thought, but I wonder whether the volunteer saturation level has been reached and whether adding to that load would result in. . . well . . . overload.
What happened with Rodeo/Gringo Day this year? Hmmm, not enough volunteers and too much grouching about those who have done the work in the past. Oh, and lots of comment about 'the establishment'. I wonder just who sees whom in this way.
I, for one, am a bit tired--nope, change that: REALLY tired--of the mud-slinging. Positive suggestions, I think, are always welcome, OH, and helping hands, possibly even money.
Regarding the comment that "With 37 postings this is obviously a topic needing further discussion."--might I suggest that 37 postings suggests this topic has been, as a message board thread, about exhausted.
Oh, and how does one "politely say 'bullshit'"? Politely? Methinks the speaker doth underestimate the power of words.
In my several years of enjoying the Art Walk, I've certainly not noticed a "gradual decline and shrinking participation as dis-gruntled folks drop out from frustration." Quite the opposite, in fact.
I'm not suggesting that changes cannot refresh an organization, but I want to thank those who do the work for . . . well, for doing the work. Art Walk is a much-loved part of the La Manz scene, and I know I'm not alone in looking forward to that day (possibly days, in the future) each year and enjoying immensely. :O)

I agree with you, Red. I am so hesitant to put my two cents worth into the message board, aka the vicious board--no one knows how much ire one might inspire.

Ideas for change do not mean that people have not done a good job in the past.

I know we can not use the jardin--I don't know if there are rules related to use of the casino. I suppose there would be rent. I don't know about music--what some people like, others hate. Didn't eat at a restaurant yesterday because we didn't like the music, for an instance.

In any event, having lots of people in one central location would be very helpful to the "consumers." But as a consumer, it is kind of fun to go to the artist's homes/studios.

I don't think the fact that there are so many responses means that the subject has been exhausted. I know I was an active volunteer this past year and gave up out of frustration--at least for the time being.

So, I say: Let's keep talking and thinking. But, PLEASE, keep it civil.
