The scoring is similar to a diving competition. We have five judges. The highest possible score from each judge is 10. The top and bottom scores are thrown out, so the highest possible score is 3 x 10, or 30. 30 minus 1 for reading would be 29. Most final scores at these events, before penalties, average around 22 to 27. Ten seconds over and you would be deducted one point. One minute over and you would be deducted 6 points, a substantial amount. These penalties exist because StorySlams are traditionally disciplined, competitive events, and to keep the program moving along at a nice pace.
It is easier to tell a story with a lot of time than it is with less time. Thus, the discipline.
Edit, edit, edit, to avoid being penalized. These are not my rules, but the rules set down by StorySlams held for the last 20 or so years.
In most cases, points are deducted at the 5:30 mark, but I have relaxed the time to 6 minutes. 53
