We saw the the Monarchs 5 years ago and it is an amazing experience that I highly recommend. We stayed at the Hotel Casino in Morelia right on the main square and hired a guide who picked us up at our hotel to take us to the butterflies. | ------------------------Re: Butterflies

I went with Mexico Eco-Tours out of Melaque. We stayed in beautiful colonial hotels, they took care of all travel, and we visited some other interesting sites on the tour. Highly recommended! | ------------------------Re: Butterflies

I'd like to second Lisa's recommendation. I have been on many of Mexico Eco-Tours' tours and have always had a marvelous trip! | ------------------------Re: Butterflies

Have been to see the butterflies numerous times, and though I love the Eco-Mex tour, the very best experience is to stay right in Angangueo, at the base of the santuario, so that you can have time to experience the butterflies awakening in the morning and slowly emerging from their large nests in the pines. there are lots of local guides to take you to the site, and then other guides to walk through with you. | ------------------------Re: Butterflies

We went to see the monarchs two years ago. You are not allowed to wander around the mountain without a local guide. So, any group or guide that you hire (other than at the base of the trail) merely is providing you with transportation to the area. Zitacuaro, Michoacán is an easily accessible regional city (pop 80k) that is in the midst of the four popular Monarch sites. It is an easy collectivo or taxi ride (25 minutes) to any of the four. We stayed at JM B&B in Macheros (Joel & Elena) and they have very comfortable B&B in small town. Joel provides transportation, arranges, and escort to all four sites. Very nice people. | ------------------------ |
