The Spoken Word Artist Charity Series StorySlam Monday, January 22nd
Posted by Ron Stock on January 11, 2018, 8:53 am
This event will be held at Casa Luz from 7:30 to 9:30 on Monday, January 22nd. Five judges will be picked by number from the audience (If you want) and the judging, similar to judging for a diving event, will be silent. The Storytellers will have 5 minutes to tell their stories and begin to be penalized only after 6 minutes. Five prizes will be awarded and the winners can choose a local charity or family to support. Examples: The Dave Sullins Memorial Art Fund, The Sewer Project, School Uniforms, Animal Control, etc. No theme. One point will be deducted from your final results if you read your story. Sign-up as you enter Casa Luz that evening. Anne Wheeler, our winner twice in a row, will be out of town so the rest of us (I will tell a story but not be part of the competition) will have a chance to win the big dough. | ------------------------Re: The Spoken Word Artist Charity Series StorySlam Monday, January 22nd

How many points are possible? This means -6 points for every minute, correct? | ------------------------Re: The Spoken Word Artist Charity Series StorySlam Monday, January 22nd

Jo Anna, The scoring is similar to a diving competition. We have five judges. The highest possible score from each judge is 10. The top and bottom scores are thrown out, so the highest possible score is 3 x 10, or 30. 30 minus 1 for reading would be 29. Most final scores at these events, before penalties, average around 22 to 27. Ten seconds over and you would be deducted one point. One minute over and you would be deducted 6 points, a substantial amount. These penalties exist because StorySlams are traditionally disciplined, competitive events, and to keep the program moving along at a nice pace. It is easier to tell a story with a lot of time than it is with less time. Thus, the discipline. Edit, edit, edit, to avoid being penalized. These are not my rules, but the rules set down by StorySlams held for the last 20 or so years. In most cases, points are deducted at the 5:30 mark, but I have relaxed the time to 6 minutes. | ------------------------ |
