zero tolerance for beach dogs

The beach, which should be the domain of children and shore birds, is overrun by those malodorous curs. When they charge at me, inevitably their owners will reassure me that their flea bag is "friendly". Well, maybe it is, but I`m not. When this happens and no one is around, I can tell if it is a local or gringo dog by picking up a rock. Mexican dogs will back off right away. Gringo dogs have to learn that lesson the hard way. You all want an off-leash space? Next time let it loose on the highway please.

my and I wife are scared of dogs, but the owners don't care. Have had the same experiences here over the years. Good luck speaking with the owners, we have simply given up. | ------------------------Re: zero tolerance for beach dogs

You suck. You are a sucky person. Go somewhere else where they hate dogs just as much as you do. Maybe the White House. | ------------------------Re: zero tolerance for beach dogs

I hope this discussion degenerates no further into disrespectful name calling and threats. Can we please have a respectful discussion of the issue, rather than insulting and demeaning each other? This is a small community with so many good things going on in it, and I’d like to have that continue. Respectful communication is very important to prevent degeneration of this wonderful, cooperative, supportive community. | ------------------------Re: zero tolerance for beach dogs

I respect Julio and Fernando for their concerns. And expressing them. And strongly support what they are saying. The nasty responses are out of line, and speak to an extreme lack of thoughtfulness and courtesy to others. Not all people are comfortable with dogs. Peace and consideration

As a responsible dog owner I would agree that a sensible discussion is called for with respect to this issue. However I do not think that "thoughtfulness and courtesy" are encouraged by beginning that discourse using the following language: "malodorous curs" "Flea bag" "have to learn that lesson the hard way" "Next time let it loose on the highway" Respect works two ways.

I feel that the comment of throwing a rock that could easily cause an injury that offends dog owners. I am truly sorry for the individuals who are deathly afraid of dogs, they are warm wonderful animals for the most part and deserve to be treated with respect and if some owners can not control their dogs, they should be kept on a leash, regardless of where they are running. | ------------------------Re: zero tolerance for beach dogs

I agree Erin. But the dog owners whine continuously when you slip on the choke chain and leash. Perhaps duct tape would help? Then you could drag the ir-responsible owners back to the street and let the dog enjoy the beach in peace. Rojo | ------------------------Re: zero tolerance for beach dogs

Subject is dear to my heart. On one side of the coin dogs are warm, fuzzy wonderful creatures. On the other side, normally there is ambivalence all the way to hate. And there is a whole spectrum in between. The real issue, for me, is aggressive dogs. Those that attack other dogs and those who harass strangers with their charge, growling and backing in a threatening manner. There are no reasons to tolerate aggressive dogs. Apologies after the fact are meaningless. Am I to let an elderly visitor walk the beach? How about letting my developmentally disabled daughter. And yes, what should I do when I'm being threatened/harassed (some owners say just stand still until we catch up to control the dog). This is a dog problem. In reality, it is a dog owner problem. The dog owners should be the ones to control the issue/find a solution. Dog owners should have either physical(leash) or voice control. Dog owners should let the owners of aggressive dogs know that they are causing the resentment and anger of others. If the beach is safe to walk, the dogs would be welcomed. For the dog defenders, give some suggestions as to how those who are harassed and threatened should react. And standing frozen in place is not an option. | ------------------------Re: zero tolerance for beach dogs

As I suggested, a sensible discussion would address all issues, and presumably result in some respectful suggestions being adopted. What to do "after the fact" just continues endless dialogue, some helpful, some downright hostile. | ------------------------Re: zero tolerance for beach dogs

P.S. In the absence of regulations, which by the way are difficult to enforce wherever one lives, I used a spray bottle to discourage aggressive dogs when walking in LM with my mild mannered rescue dog. Turn the nozzle to stream, not spray, for more impact. It will not hurt the dog, but sure will startle it enough for it to back off. Worked for us every time. | ------------------------Re: zero tolerance for beach dogs

I would like to see the dog owners and lovers address another issue: the problem of dog shit. Where is the responsible "poop and scoop" which almost all northern dog walkers have learned? It is often quite unpleasant to discover a steaming pile after some beloved dog has run to "do his business". This happens even on the town's main street.

we have one of the most beautiful beaches around...we all love it...the dogs love it...the birds love it....oh yes...also ALL THE MOTOS AND ATV'S AND EVEN TRUCKS LOVE SPEEDING DOWN THE BEACH!! I am a responsible dog owner who does pick up poop If I see another dog owner who does NOT ...I offer them a bag and tell them...hey...over there...here is a bag...please pick it up. noone can do anything about dog poop from beach dogs or town dogs or birds or any other animal so.... I have told other dog owners with dogs that run out at me or at my dogs that it is not acceptable to have a dog on the beach unleashed who has that kind of behavior and please you need to put your dog on a leash (many do voluntarily by the way) and most of the time people respond in a good way...It is important how we speak to other people ...coming on with anger and threats and insults really does nothing to come to a peaceful result. I am praying for everyone to be kind and considerate in this matter and respect the animals and also the ownners. Linda | ------------------------ |
