I case you haven't heard, on Feb.1st, 2007 President Calderon put into effect 2 amendments to the National Wildlife Protection Law. Quoting from the El Universal which quotes the law in English "any activity that inhibits the capacity of mangroves to recharge it's natural ecosystem, or cuts off their natural flow from rivers, dunes or adjacent maritime zones is strictly prohibited." "El Universal" states that "these reforms, approved by Congress in December, restrict construction and development activities in coastal mangroves." Much of the world wide environmental outcry against the destruction of costal mangroves and their ecosystems (building houses and other projects along the beaches that mangroves border and protect)has come after the recent devastating hurricanes in the Yucatan and tsunamis in Indonesia. It has become obvious to the world community that if the beaches and their Mangrove forest behind them had been left undisturbed much of the lost of life would have been prevented and the beautiful coastlines would have been left intact. There is work to be done to make sure "our" coastline is left intact and nothing slips into someone's pocket book, but thanks to the new president not crumbling to the "special interest" developers our beautiful Tenacatita Bay will remain as it is for the next generation of people who have grown up here and for those that have grown to love it as it is!!!! Viva Calderon, Viva our Mangroves!!! In case you would like to read the 2 articles regarding this from El Universal here are the sites: |
