There is lots of information on various types of algal blooms, including red tides at www.nwfsc.gov. This is the NOAA site for the office that has the lead on blooms for the nation, though research is done in multiple coastal offices. Recently, scientists have been working on a diagnostic litmus test that tells when the water is toxic to humans, as well as when it is unsafe to eat fish and shellfish. Not sure where the research is now, but the main researcher is a woman named Vera Trainer. She can probably be googled. |
