Cristy who owns Casa Senorina B & B here in Barra was contacted by these people too and I, with no hotel or rooms to rent, receive this brand of junk mail all the time. Cristy contacted me because she thought the reservation was valid and had moved to the third level with them where she had trouble understanding the broken English. They were trying to explain how they were going to send her three credit card numbers so that she could charge her deposit for the rooms they were reserving plus - and here is the real scam - the $4000 USD that she was to charge to the cards and then send by wire transfer to a third party who for some reason was unable to process the credit card charge at their end. The third party is of course in on the scam, the cards are either counterfit, stolen or otherwise flawed, the inn keeper winds up out $4000 USD and the "guests" never show up for the reservation. It is a standard internet scam and there is a good article on it with examples of the letters they send here http://www.bbexpo.com/scams2006.asp |
