A little light is just the problem. We have a number of friends who have Mexican citizenship by virtue of living in Mexico for five years with an FM3, then two years with an FM2. So we thought we were doing the same thing. At year three, we bought a new car NoB and returned to Mexico. A month or two later, Immigration declared that time spent in Mexico on a FM3 visa no longer counted toward resident status. The W. administration had done something new to piss them off. So we lost three years AND we couldn't get FM2 visas legally without selling our new car, presumably for a huge loss. We couldn't afford that, so our plans to become citizens have been put on the shelf for the time being.

So, it does sound like the woman has FM3 mixed up with FM2, but ¿Quien sabe? We do know many many gringos and canadienses who regularly spend much more than two months at a time NoB and for many years. We've never heard of a problem. And you bring up a good point in the FM3 vs FM2 debate, since there are such "time in Mexico" rules with an FM2.
