I also disagree with the idea that the US isn't concerned about ownership of the car. I once crossed with a truck that I owned and my New Mexico plate was on the rear of the auto but the scan camera also picked up a Colorado plate that had been left attached to the front bumper and this went into the Colorado DMV as a different owner...so have a proof of registration or assignment of usage by the real owner...also true of rented cars. Customs will really give you a hard time without some proof. Don
