Bret said "Daniel, there was a very bright flare last night just a few minutes after we saw the ISS. Let me know if you need a hand spotting one." Yes, I do need a hand, I look at the coordinates some sites give and my eyes cross in confusion. The information on the link you gave is easy enough but I (and others) find plain talk i.e. "stand on the beach and look toward the old hotel at such and such a time" much easier to work with. Love the Iridium flare information, I had never even heard of such a thing. I think I have seen them before but just attributed it to the sunset oil. But once again, until some kind of interface is developed which will give me visual instructions (not the data) my seeing one on schedule will never happen. Where was the one that happened last night? Was it off the ISS? Do you happen to know what the brightness magnitude was for the ISS last night? I will compare it with tonight but it seemed to be really, really bright! And damn! that thing was movin quick! I read a couple places that there are times you can see the ISS during the day with a telescope or some really good binoculars. I did some work on this early this morning, I did not get as accurate as you did on the Heavens Above site (your entire post was great by the way) but I did find some neat stuff, one of which was this Orbitron program which lets you see the current position and flight path of about 30 satellite's (Including ISS and Hubble) plus you can go forward and back in time. If you saw a satellite go by at 10 pm last evening you could find out which satellite it was. If you want to know what is going to happen over LM (or anywhere) tonight you could find out. I never got it to work perfectly for me but will sometime soon. Use the download link at the top of the page (USA, Germany...it don't matter) Thanks again for pointing out the ISS last night and for your great post. D |
