Intriguing idea that is worth exploring. I searched the internet to see what kind of technology is out there. I came across a posting at www.gov.gg/ccm/navigation/environment/beaches---coastline/beach-cleaning/ - which favors hand removal because of the environmental downside of mechanical removal. I realize you're not talking about the heavy equipment that is used in some places, so the environmental impacts might not be the same. Nonetheless, any mechanical approach should contemplate what negative impacts might occur.

Fortunately, there are only limited periods when a 2-3 hour/day hand removal is inadequate to remove most of the litter off the beach in front of the village. I am grateful that 2 people answered my recent plea for help while schools were out!! The beach would be in far worse shape without their efforts.

Winter is easiest (excluding Xmas week and Semana Santa), because gringos don't litter very much. Also, Mexican tourists are not littering as much as they used to. However, changes at Tenacatita will almost certainly mean more people and beach litter in La Manzanilla.

I would love it if the beach restaurants and rental tables could be persuaded to provide ashtrays. I think that would greatly reduce the butts on the beach. The proprietors rake litter under their tables each morning, but that method doesn't remove all the butts (or beer bottle caps). Those are exposed and moved when tides reach the table areas, which mostly seems to occur in the summer months. Thus, the billions of butts on the beach right now have been building up. I'm exaggerating on the number, but there's a lot!

Meanwhile, tourism is down now, so there isn't too much new litter added on a daily basis. So, this reprieve affords a chance to clean up a lot of the newly-exposed things. And then the September 16 holiday weekend will have to be dealt with!
