There is a route which goes through a sleepy border in New Mexico, right past where I have a home, and those who cross there, most recently mis Patron's de Canada, on their way back north, report that this route was clear sailing, absolutely no problems. The border crossing itself is probably one of the most laid US-Mexico crossings that you will ever encounter. Look on your map and find Columbus, NM. However you route yourself there, it is up to you. You will be going through the state of Chih., just prior to and during the cross at Palomas. The physical location is approximately 55 miles west of Santa Theresa, which is the commercial crossing for El Paso, and approximatley 90 miles west of the dreaded Juarez. I've lived in Columbus off and on since 2000. There has been some targeted violence, quite minimal compared to other border towns, and like everywhere along the border, keep your eyes open and there should not be any problems. Having lived in San Diego before, and most recently I crossed there on foot, less than one month ago, it's a mess, very congested. Whatever you decide, blessings to all on your Journey. Vaya con Dios...
