I am sorry for your loss, D.

I am not much of a dog person, but I know you are.

A little bit of detective work might point to the poisoner. My friend in Calif had a "free range" dog that wandered through the neighborhood ostensibly spreading joy, until the day he turned up poisoned.

My theory is that his dog had a regular schedule of crapping in someone's planter, and the planter owner felt he had no other options to abate the problem.

With this in mind, I am thinking some conjecture about who your dog might have been pissing off (and Leon's dog, too), might give some insight as to what happened.
