I have been coming to LaManz since 2002 every november for a couple weeks. While home in Wa state I make my living designing and repairing failing septic systems. To all of you who want to stick your heads in the sand, let me tell you this: You have a septic problem which directlty affects the water quality in the bay as well as your overall health. the don't worry be hippy attitude many of you seem to display will eventually be the reason nobody will be swimming in the groovy bay. There are many different inexpensive steps that can be taken at the point of pollution, your individual septic tanks if you even have one, to help improve the water quality in the bay. Hurricanes and flooding aside, this problem will only continue since Lamanz has become a victim of its own popularity in this regard. For anyone who is interested in discussing this in a rational scientific way, I will be in town between Nov 22 and dec 2nd. You can reach me through Willy, since I spent quite a bit of time in his resturant. To all of you who think this is not a real problem, be warned. Septic waste carries 29 different virulent spores that can cause serious health problems, one of those diseases is dengue. two more good ones are cholera and typhoid. Although the sun and saltwater does kill many of the bacteria associated with septic waste, it does nothing to the spores and cysts that are resistant to these, but can make humans quite ill. I love La Manz and it makes me sad to see how disgusting the water quality has become over the past 12 years. I would like very much to help clean it up either through education or direct action. I remain at your disposal(No pun) to try and help come up with some simple solutions to at least curb the wasteflow or pretreat what is currently going into the big pipe and on into the mangroves, which is another really stupid idea. Thank you John P. Jensen |
