Well stated Carol, thanks.

I found this a while back but did not post it as I did not want to bring
this thread back to the top. But now that it is here is a good link on Portugal

A resounding success or a disastrous failure: Re-examining the interpretation
of evidence on the Portuguese decriminalisation of illicit drugs

It is quite the long read. Here is the conclusion

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1465-3362.2011.00383.x/full#ss17

There sure seems to be a lot riding on one country legalizing, I think its
worth the data to have at least a couple others give it a try.

Other thoughts on the original debate.

It was supposed to be about ending the war on drugs but went into legalization,
and a bunch of other issues, which are relevant but do not address the
central question of what do you do when you are losing a war?

I think they may have inserted the Russel Crow /Peter Hitchens exchange
just for a tabloid effect e.g. drama, which is a sad technique for them to use.

Over all I got very little out of the debate, which supposedly was
the first for that format. They got a way's to go if they really want
to help people make a decision.
