We, my kids and I, got caught in a realy nasty one in Mazatlan some years ago. It was brown, had big waves, and very powerful. We had to dive under each wave or get beat up by them. We tried to swim parallel to the beach and got nowhere, turned out that there was a strong prevailing current against us that kept us in the rip. We finally managed to sort of body surf and roll around under water, gasping for air each time we came up, and slowly made it in. My lesson: take a good look at the water before entering, especially at a new, unknown to you location. Also, ask locals about conditions, such as rips, currents etc. We were very lucky! |
