We did have a hurricane last year - maybe the forces involved in that (wind, huge waves, more than the usual erosion from the hills) were the cause for a change in the pattern - remember, too, the beach last year stayed steep, in parts, for the whole winter. Maybe it takes 2 years, or more, for the beach to "recover" naturally from such a blow.
