Morelia is a long way from the butterflies. Unless you want to leave really, really, really early, you will want to stay in one of the towns in the mountains near the refuge.

This is such a fabulous trip. Lots of walking, but very well developed and easily navigable trails. The local ejido members, some of whom speak English, guide all comers. You want to be there in time to see the first rays of the sun strike the butterflies. It is like being on the Discovery Channel with the butterflies bursting into the air and then going for a drink of water.

I can't remember the name of it, but one of the women ejido members has just written a book about the refuge and her work returning to the village each year. Amazon should have it for download. I haven't read it, but would think it would be a great read before you leave.
