Does anyone know what the worst cases scenario is for having a foreign plated car in Mexico and NOT having your FM3?

I went to the immigration office on Friday to renew my FM3 but since I am leaving Nov 23 until February, they were not able to get me a renewed visa. They could extend for maximum 60 days and that was it. They advised me to "just leave and come back on a tourist visa" and shrugged their shoulders when I explained about the car. My only other option was to reapply at the Mexican consulate in Vancouver. At least the lineup is quicker there
