Traveling through Lukeville, Sonoyta, Altar and Caborca is risky, at best. That area is a battleground of narco gangs vying for control of trade routes and turf. Even the Mexican govenment and military are very wary entering this area. I have traveled that route dozens of times, but always cross with a full tank of gas and do not stop until I reach Santa Ana. Through Altar and Caborca I only stop vaguely at the stop signs, and make eye contact with nobody. I would suggest you use the crossing at Nogales.
