OK, so I made my call but I have learned something.

David, you were correct when calling from Skype on a computer. This was confirmed by another friend. What I neglected to say, because I didn't know it mattered, was that I was trying to call using Skype on my iPhone. Fail. Once I tried my computer, Skype automatically prefixed +1 and added 52 when I selected Mexico and the call went through perfectly
