Yes, definitely go to Mexconnect and read about this situation there, there are a number of good threads and people who have really put some serious work into understanding the changes.

A car that old is generally not worth nationalizing, it is a lot of hassle and expense, could easily cost you what the car is worth and there's a lot of fraud be perpetrated by fake import agents.

You can't sell a U.S. plated car in Mexico, you have to take it out. If it isn't driveable that far, you may be able to junk it and get Aduana to cancel the TIP. That takes some work too.

People who have been in Mexico on FM2/3 for 4 years or more are basically being given no choice (without leaving the country to get a new temporal) about converting to permanente and the minute they do that, they are now told their TIP is invalid and the car could be seized.

We decided to have my wife give up her FM3 and just use tourist visas and 6 month car permits since we cross the border every 6 months minus 2 weeks. That's a lot cheaper than losing 50 percent on a perfectly good car and spending a whole lot of money on a car that isn't as good and that we don't want.

This might work for some of you if you go out regularly but 180 days is the absolute time limit.

Good luck with this.
