In the three times in three winters that I stayed in La Manzanilla at "Casa Maria", I just loved being in the presence of Maria. Controversial, and a character? Yes, but she enchanted me with her discussions, her memories, and her wonderful stories of growing up 70 years ago, between two borders. And there was always drama at Casa Maria, enough for a sitcom. Double-booking, errant hired help, plumbing gone wrong, dinner parties gone right-"Casa Maria" was Faulty Towers Mexicano. You didn't just rent a room, you walked onstage with no script!
I skipped La Manz last year and went to Hawaii instead, but had since booked in with Maria for the month of February, next winter. I so wanted to hang out with her again, go do some work in her "Potrero", listen to more of her stories, watch a few more Nicholas Cage movies (we were big fans!) make her kefir and yogurt, and just drink Tequila with her after dinner.
But as I heard this last week, she has passed on, and I won't have that chance. Sigh...I just loved her, and La Manzanilla probably won't feel the same to me for awhile. But in my head, I can hear her saying something like "Oh, Honey,we'll all have to put on our wings sooner or later!" as she works to pin a red Hisbiscus flower into her hair.
I send my condolences and sympathy to Marias' friends and her family, she was a really wonderful woman.
