I finally found out that the splitter, modem, and telephone had all be fried
(maybe in an electrical storm?) and that this whole part of town had been affected.
Felipe suggests we unplug both the electrical and the phone connections
for the summer (us snowbirds), and/or that we purchase a surge protector
(he will be getting more in, and they are about 450 pesos) Felipe of CompuPlus was the
person who found the final piece to this puzzle, and he works closely with Telmex,
so I recommend anyone see him if you have problems.
