I phone service??? or buy phone?

I am arriving back in town on Saturday for about 5 weeks. I have an injury I am recuperating from and I will need a phone at my house. I have an iPhone using ATT in the US. I have checked with the company about a plan, but want to make sure these phones work there before buying an inernational plan. I will only be using the phone for short calls to get a taxi or set up appointments. Or do you think it is better to buy a phone with a Sim card while I am down there? If this is the best way to go, can I do this in Cihuatlan after my plane arrival at 3:30 PM? Or perhaps buy one in Melaque? Where would I buy one? Any feedback would be helpful.
