That's a real stunner, Mr. D. What you've photographed is the Hieroglyphic Moth (Diphthera festiva) in the Family Nolidae (formerly classified in the Noctuidae). I wonder if you'd consider submitting your photo to this organization that I had just heard about.

Looks like a simple sign-up and info like this on the range of insects of all kinds is very valuable for researchers (and they provide a definitive identification). I see on their site that for this insect, they only list one recent siting/photo in Mexico, that in the Baja in 2012. However, you may not have the time nor inclination...

Old entomological ways die hard - I love the challenge of figuring out the identity of various insects posted on the board. This was an easy one this time, as I knew of this particular moth. Got tripped up on a pink-spotted swallowtail a couple of weeks ago - still recovering... 8-)
