The Inauguration of the John Collins Teacher Training Fund

Posted by La Catalina Foundation on January 6, 2015, 1:38 pm

Dinner, Live Music Will Launch Memorial Fund to Enhance Local Teaching

A Jan. 17 event will inaugurate the John D. Collins Teacher Training Fund, in support of excellence in teaching in La Manzanilla.

Dr. Collins, a retired college teacher who volunteered for years in local and regional schools, died in August. “He would love nothing better than that his memory serve to motivate and inspire the local teaching force,” his wife, Katharine, says.

The inaugural event is a 6:30 p.m. dinner at Lora Loka’s seaside restaurant, which includes a performance by Guadalajara classical guitarist Francisco Penilla.

Earlier that same day 20 local pre-school, primary and secondary school teachers will attend the second in a series of workshops on “mindful teaching” – improving the quality of education by enhancing the educator’s ability to more deeply connect with students. Thirteen teachers attended a workshop in November. Though participants deemed it a “resounding success,” primary level teachers were unable to attend, and have since shown great interest in this innovative teacher training approach.

A “kick-start” musical event in December raised more than 4,500 pesos for the training – thanks in great part to wonderful music provided by Sam, Rob, Denise and Charlie. Additional funds are needed to defray the costs of bringing in the facilitators for this month’s workshop. A total of 20 teachers have registered.

The cost is 150 pesos per person, covering dinner and music. A hat will be passed around to collect donations to the John D. Collins Teacher Training Fund. Seating is limited so don’t delay in buying your tickets – currently on sale at Lora Loka’s. A sample of Francisco Penilla’s music can be found at:

Good for you Catalina Foundation! This is a wonderful way to thank John and Katharine Collins for the work they have done for decades, in Mexico, Wyoming, Africa, Seattle. Love to all the family there in La Manz. Thanks John, you are missed but still always around somehow, you inspire us. xo

Thanks Jackie for putting together this event. Since the fate of the world is all about educating the next generation, teacher training needs to be right up there as a priority in every community. So good that you are volunteering your organizational skills to support it happening here.

This sounds wonderful! Lora Loca's at sunset is a great place to be, and
with such an interesting line-up of entertainment...we'll think we're in Mexico
or something! Do you ever
have to pinch yourself to remind yourself it's real...?

Just a reminder that this worthy event is on tonight at 6:30 pm at Lora Loka's. A bonus is that the Fire Eating show is on nearby- you can see it from there!

For those who didn't know, John Collins was Davison Collins' father ("Kayak Dave").

Thank you all for coming to the official Inauguration of the John Collins teacher training fund.

The speeches were touching by the Collins family and John's English students. The food by Lora was delicious and the live music by Francisco Panilla from Guadalajara has a hit.

The event raised 8,300 pesos which will go into the teacher training fund for upcoming workshops for the La Manzanilla public school teachers. Thanks to all who attended for making this event a success!
