Has anyone else getting stung or bit while swimming in the ocean in the mornings. My brother in law is coming out with a lot of sting marks.

Yes! This afternoon I was in the water watching the Pelicans fly and dive on either side of me, and suddenly realized my arm was all pins and needles. Of course I was moving around in the water enjoying some swimming strokes while doing this. The only thing I could think of was that I had brushed the tentacles of a Jellyfish.
We immediately left, I picked some of the herb that was used on me in 2011 by a local woman to draw out the poison of a Stingray I had stepped on (couldn't believe this was happening to me again). I boiled the herb and applied the tea with the hottest water.
Apparently a diluted vinegar applied right away neutralizes the venom from the punctures.
Although Jellyfish I was told don't usually make an appearance here until at least April or May, I don't know what else it could be. The rash from the stings compares to what I saw on the Internet and is still bothersome.
Anyone else have any info they can share? :~)

Portuguese Man O War are not actually jellyfish, but can deliver serious stings. Don't use vinegar with these as it will spread the toxins. I read if one is washed up onto shore there could be others...

Many of us have experienced the stings of what are called "Sea Lice" and are, according to the internet, the microscopic larvae of jellyfish.

The bites tend to affect women, particularly, getting caught in the seams of our bathing suits. They can be like a rash, or like nasty welts.

The answer is to wear a rash guard, or a long sleeved shirt made for the water, when swimming. This has helped me immeasurably. The shirts are easy to find. I got mine in Melaque at a beach shop on the street where Hawaii's is.

Also, people will get out of the water and shower and change right away. If there's a sting then vinegar or lime juice can help some. There's not really good antidote that I've found, but everyone is different.

If there's a pattern to the rash, then you probably did get into some jelly fish. The pattern would be like a tentacle wrapped around the body part. We've experienced jelly fish in every month we've been here.

Don't take this as gospel. Check out Sea Lice on the internet.

Good luck!

Vicki

We occasionally have tentacles from dead jellyfish was ashore in Cuastecomates. They retain their sting. I just move to where they aren't and then have no problem.
...never heard of sea lice, but there is always something new to learn!

Yesterday while swimming a mile with my goggles I experienced about 5 mild stings along the way and saw a couple of jellyfish - clear about 3 " across with a reddish brown centre and 6 " tentacles. We had a whole swarm of them for 1 day about 2 weeks ago. I had to get out of the water. By afternoon they had drifted north with the current to Boca.
Fortunately my skin doesn't react other than feeling the sting for about 20 minutes.

Sea Lice: They do cause some irritation but not like the jellyfish. Like they said, if it is a jelly it will usually be in some kind of a pattern where sea lice is a mark here and there.
The last one I got is still there and that has been about 3 weeks. ago.
Glad to have the up date so to stay clear.
Who ever said jellies are not here until April or May must not vacation here. They can come and go any time.

My wife Debbie has gotten a bad rash from jellyfish in the sea around here, so irritating she couldnīt sleep. Vinegar, limon, and a host of other things didnīt work. Finally, she found that white zinc oxide cream relieved the itching and cleared up the rash.

Not sea lice here, pattern of the rash follows a line and wraps around. Thanks for the heads-up Dave, not going back in the water without being prepared! Does the local pharmacia carry the zinc oxide?

It seems like every time I go in the water I get stung, usually it's the sea lice, which have already been mentioned here. They are prevalent in the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Coast, it's all on the Internet if you go look. The only thing I have found that helps at all is to take an anti-histamine, every day for 5 or 6 days. The blisters take forever to go down, itch and sting like crazy, and none of the other suggested remedies work for me, lime juice, vinegar etc. I might look into the zinc oxide with the next stings. What fun living in a tropical paradise. Something is gonna get you

Well they are out there again. Yesterday received many stings from what they call the sea lice. Not the same as from the jelly fish. Even had a water shirt on.
Very itchy and red welts. Also seen the blue jelly or man-o-war yesterday on the beach in the evening.

Haven't gotten any this year yet, but the best treatment for me is to put hot water on the itches. That quiets the itching down for a few hours. If it starts itching again in the middle of the night, I put a wet washcloth in the microwave and press it on the spots. It stops the itching immediately for a few more hours. Never fails to stop the miserable itching.
