I have a lens with a focal length of 500 mm. It is so long and so heavy it needs a second tripod to hold it up. Unfortunately it is not considered to be a fast lens having a minimum aperture of F4.5. The depth of field is also rather small but the obvious advantage is that when you look through it it makes everyone else's equipment look enormous. So despite it's cumbersome appearance one could say that it is of generous proportions. And if generosity is to size as aperture is to focal length we could certainly claim the size does indeed matter. (If you really know what to do with it! )

How photographers flirt.
Overheard at the bar at a photographers convention just before closing time.
