re staying in MExico for over 6 months

is there any one out there from the U.S. with a tourist card who has extended their stay after 6 months are up? I assume that I would need to leave Mexico, and get a new tourist card when I return.

Is there number of days I would need to stay in the U.S. before returning? Is it possible to pay for a new card without leaving?
Any advice would be welcome

Many years ago, my first year here I stayed longer than 6 months. That year, before my six months was up I filed for my fm-2. Immigration has made many changes since those days, but I'm sure there is something you can do. It may be expensive, but maybe cheaper than a flight to LA and back. If your Spanish is not great, it will make things easier if you have a translator. Good Luck.

My understanding, not always right, is that you have to leave Mexico and then return on another 180 day tourist visa. There is no waiting period before you do this.

I've heard that the immigration office in Melaque is very good. You might want to put these questions to them.

Definately check with immigration in Melaque. The young woman there speaks english and is very helpful. Office is on north east corner of the main plaza.

In the old days, before recent changes to immigration laws, you could apply for an FM3 in Mexico. Now, there is no FM3, as it has been replaced with the Residente Temporal, which must be obtained in your home country.

Thanks for your suggestions everybody! Jean and Larrie, I will go over to Melaque tomorrow. Do you happen to know if I can just walk in, and whether they are open all day?

Thanks, Sparks, I figured as much. Do you happen to know if there is a minimum amount of time I need to stay in the U.S. Befor returning, or could I take a flight and fly back into the same day?

Flying you could turn around in minutes. In most cases the same at a border crossing

Curious Sparks (or anyone) if you know someone who has actually done that
recently? The reason I ask is I remember reading something about a year ago
(not going to look it up now) that said Mexico was going to stop that, something
about people who are staying here year round doing that instead of getting
the necessary documents to say for a year.

Remember killer summer time. I have taken a train and a bus and a plane to extend ..just in and out but then bite the bullet and did working papers.

I believe the immigration office is open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The young woman speaks Spanish and both she and the young man are easy to work with.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I did go to Melaque to IMS office this week. They were very nice and informative.
I was told: at this time, U.S. citizens with a tourist card may go back over the border into the U.S. - any time before their 180 days are up - and then return to Mexico and receive another 180 day tourist card as soon as they want. It can literally be on the same day. So although the trip is costly from this part of Mexico, getting a second 180 day card is perfectly legal.
