Looking towards town from half way down the beach I see either a baby whale or dolphins in the bay? Which is it?

A Humpback whale calf will have a mother with it. Dolphins don't usually travel solo, but might. Keep watching

I'm thinking that it is a male whale travelling alone. After mating in southern waters during the winter, the male will often travel ahead of the rest of a pod back to northern waters. In the case of our local humpbacks, they would be heading back up the Pacific coast to the cold and food plentiful Alaskan waters.
