We learned at the tsunami/earthquake meeting that the timeframe to get to higher ground in the event of a tsunami here is 5 minutes. Because of La Manazanilla’s proximity to a fault in the ocean it's important that each household and individual have an emergency plan.
The firemen are visiting local businesses and restaurants near the ocean to inform the staff and owners what to do in case of tsunami. The officials are especially concerned about the reaction of visiting tourists who may not know what to do.
The best thing we all can do is to walk or run, not drive, to an area that is 12 meters above sea level. Most of the streets uphill from the main jardin are at this level. The wave then recedes quickly.
For those living in the lower areas north of the cocodrilario the advice is to get on the road either on foot or in a vehicle towards Boca and seek higher ground. It would be best if everyone stayed off the on main road in and out of La Manzanilla
Stay out of buildings that are showing evidence of earthquake damage, like large cracks in the walls. The second floor of a safe building would be another place to wait it out. Don't go to a car, that's how most accidents happen.
There are only a few posters around town about the upcoming drills, which will be held separately for schoolchildren, and then on Saturday morning, Sept 19, for the general population. You can see a poster by Mike's tackle shop. We have asked for an information sheet in English, but it has not arrived as yet.
Hope this is helpful.
