composting vs. food for animals

I just realized how much work composting has been this season - and someone told me goat manure is better for plants, and is available and cheap to buy, so...planning for next season, I would like to start a practice of saving food scraps for the pigs or chickens. Does anyone know someone who will pick them up, say, once a week or so? I think I heard that farmers here pick up food scraps from restaurants. Maybe they will add private homes to their list. | ------------------------Re: composting vs. food for animals

Carol, you are so right. When we had our chickens in Boca we had NO waste at all. They just didn't get the bones. It was amazing. Give them beats and you would get pink to red eggs a couple of days later. So much fun. Lidia might have some ideas. They must have oodles of old fruit and veg. | ------------------------Re: composting vs. food for animals

Thanks, Judy, and that's what would have been so appealing about having chickens in the yard..but it seemed like too big a responsibility... too bad... I heard from Julie that Chona, the taco stand family, raise pigs and will pick up scraps,so I will get started with that in the fall. | ------------------------ |
