Green Flash

There was a most excellent green flash at sunset last evening. Sorry, I didn't get a photo. A fact that is irrelevant to those who have experienced it before and fodder for scoff for those who haven't. Funny place we live in here, summer is slow and winter is quicker. | ------------------------Re: Green Flash

I took this green flash last year from my Casa.

Nice photo Judy, the camera doesn't lie. Or does it? I appreciate those who said they believe me even without proof. We have certainly seen enough of them together at the beach bar to know what we are talking about. But then there are also those who have never see the green flash even when they are sitting right next to me and it is a really good one. Turns out our vision is the least reliable of all of our senses, check the link below for example. http://www.cracked.com/article_20391_5-mind-blowing-ways-your-senses-lie-to-you-every-day.html So, if it turns out that I am seeing the green flash because I choose or expect to does that totally rock my world and make me a skeptic? Well I am already a skeptic, but it is good information to know. If I am the chooser of what I see then I think I'll get busy seeing beauty everywhere! | ------------------------Re: Green Flash

I've seen the green flash many times on the beach...and, it's not the Tequila or the smoke. It's one of the many things I love about being on the beach at sunset... Maybe it's Pedro's fish tacos.. best in the universe.

That link is really just the tip of the iceberg. I have a folder on my favorites titled illusions, it has 174 links to all kinds of stuff that make you go hmmmmm? My personal favorites are not the eye tricks but the ones you can change with your mind. Which way is the train going? Can you change the direction of the spin? and the ones to do with paying attention. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahg6qcgoay4 It is actually a bit unsettling especially in combination with all the other stuff in our world that tuns out to be hard to pin down to one way of being. The bible says "seek and ye shall find", a popular saying is "you find what you look for". One could also say "what you don't look for you don't find". It would be one thing if selective perception was the result of a conscious decision, but it goes much deeper than that into the realm of cognitive dissonance and a slew of biases that are unconscious and are basically shaped from our past personal experiences.

There was a long thread about the green flash a few years ago ,here on the message board. From what I gather, scientifically, and according to the many sites when I google "after image", if you stare at something red and then look at a blank white piece of paper (for example) you will see red. This isn't a choice, or the effect of mind altering , it's how you eyes work. However, I like Daniels's idea of looking for beauty always. It's a beautiful world in many ways. Cheers. | ------------------------Re: Green Flash

I just re read my own post and realize that I made a mistake... I meant to say after staring at something red, you will see green. But I like the explanation on Tim's post , too | ------------------------Re: Green Flash

I have never experienced the 'green flash' being a little 'color ignorant'. That said, it is real. I have several friends who are more color sighted that I who react when the see it. More importantly..... my deck is about 25 feet higher than the Beach Bar, which means (for those of you who are mathematically challenged) that due to the curvature of the earth, the higher one is above the ocean, the later we experience sunset. One evening last season on a clear sunset evening, we (both the Beach Bar and my patio) were watching and from below I heard the WOW!!!!, I SAW IT and about 3 seconds later I heard those 'sighted' persons on the deck say the same thing. Maybe it is like 'faith'........ you don't have to see it to have it. | ------------------------Re: Green Flash

For years I looked for a flash. I finally figured out is was more of a wink. But maybe that is just my color vision. My wife still denies it happens | ------------------------Re: Green Flash

Hi Daniel and Rob, You are both photographer so you probably know all this already: It is possible that the scientific explanation for the "green flash"is even more magical than we imagine. I don't know the exact explanation but here are a few contributing factors: When visible light approaches the planet from the sun and other heavenly bodies it is comprised of Red Green and Blue light. I think most people know this. However, when this light hits the outer atmosphere the high frequency wavelengths collide with particles of water vapour dust and pollution etc and are stripped from the incoming signal. These hi frequency light rays are perceived by our human eyes as the colour blue and this is why the sky is blue ( and why skiers wear orange goggles- but that's another story!) The remaining light is predominantly Red and this is why we get red sunsets. The sun shines through more of earth's atmosphere at dawn and sunset than at any other time of the day. Try thinking about drilling into coconut flesh at an oblique angle and you will see why this is s. The more oblique the angle the more coconut flesh the drill has to pass through. Th same is true of the sun's rays. So what happened to all the green light from the original RGB signal? Well I have to admit that I don't really know! Do you? It has to be somewhere? Perhaps when the red and blue light are particularly intense (at a very spectacular sunset.) the green light escapes and reflects on the underside of clouds shadow areas behind waves and so on. This seems a little unlikely!? Alternatively it is perhaps more likely that the green flash is entirely subjective in the sense that it appears as an "after image" on the retina of the person who sees it. Stare intently at a red light source then look away - the brain generates the complimentary colour - you will see Green. This might explain why your friends did not see what you saw. They hadn't absorbed enough light to generate a green afterimage. I hope I will see this intriguing Green Flash with my own eyes one day. Aren't you glad things are not what they seem to be?! | ------------------------
