New ATM

I do not not have a Banamex card so wanted to open an account with the Caja Solidaria to open an account to buy the card for $20 to use the ATM. I was told I could not buy one because one needs to be a Mexican resident to open an account or buy the card. The ATM does not take my regular ATM card. WHY? I use my ATM card in Melaque at their machine. | ------------------------Re: New ATM

Oh boy. I have a Bancomer, Visa Card. Visa did not show up on the Caja door as a card they would serve. But I tried my Visa card anyway. the AtM did not work for me but not because of the card. I had punched in a non-multiple of $50. I found this out because I did not give up and went in to ask Perla why they didn't take Visa bank cards. Well, she said they do and we went back to the AtM and found what I had done wrong. Voila! I got money. So the moral of the story is to go in and ask, when Perla is there, so you don't leave, as I might have, without some cash. Not all the card companies are listed. And Perla knows some English and will be more than happy to help. Luckily I went in during Caja office hours or I would be here today writing a very different story. Cruz

Thanks Cruz that helped you. Thing for me is that mine is a Visa card but it is not the Mexican banking system as Bancomer and Banamex; however my bank had approved me to use it in Mexico. It was Perla I had talked to. Bottom line is that it has to be a Mexican system, however I can use it at Banamex's ATM. I think I best keep a good thing going in Melaque and not stir something up. | ------------------------Re: New ATM

I have a Banamex account in addition to my US account, and Banamex is the only card that I got to work at our new ATM. I was also told it only dispenses in 500s, but haven't tested this out. | ------------------------Re: New ATM

Thanks for latest info on the new ATM - Cruz, your earlier post in a different string on this subject was very informative. I'm waiting to hear if anyone there has tried to use a Canadian bank or credit union debit card as opposed to a Visa or Mastercard credit card. Or maybe this is what you meant, Gayle, when you said you tried to use your "regular ATM card", i.e. you tried your bank debit card. It's not a huge concern really, but just curious. Still 5 months till we get back to LM, so lots of time to find these things out. If our cards end up not working, a quick trip over to Melaque is what we're used to anyways... | ------------------------info on the Melaque run?

We are visiting La Manz for the first time in March. If we have to go to Melaque for pesos, what's the process? Bus or taxi? and which bank or do we have a choice? TIA FYI to posters: Since there are a few "Bonnies" here, I've changed our "handle". Sorry for the confusion and not checking closer before posting the first time. | ------------------------Re: info on the Melaque run?

Hi, hi. the cheapest way between the bus or a taxie (I know you didn't ask), is the bus for 15 pesos which I find enjoyable. And you have no choice of banks in Melaque. there is only one bank in Melaque you can stick up, a banamex. there is Bancomer in Cihuatlan and the further it is the better as far as I'm concerned. You got a little more info than you asked for but it happens. Cruz | ------------------------Re: info on the Melaque run?

Thanx Cruz. The bus is always our choice too -- besides driving that old Ford V8 with over 100 bullet holes in it tends to draw unwanted attention and we're leaving my Colt 38 and Clyde's 45 at home as well. No stickups on this trip! I see from the map that Cihuatlan might be a possiblity to stop at on arrival coming from Playa de Oro aeropuerto. Appreciate the info & the humour. Thanx again. | ------------------------ATM at the airport

If you need pesos right away, I would use the ATM at the Manzanillo airport. It's located on the east wall about half way down. | ------------------------Re: ATM at the airport

Gracias, Mark S, for reminding me about the airport AtM. Do you know what it charges? In Cihuatlan you have the choice of two banks. Banamex charges 29 Pesos to Bancomer's 69 pesos; one reason I hate Bancomer. they live a block from each other near the southern entrance to the main drag, one Block from the big white church. Oh, Bonnie and Clyde, both banks rob you. I just like Banamex's style better and at least it charges less for withdrawals when using other bank cards. Good to know there's a machine at the airport, but I'd be curious about what they charge also. We've found during our previous Mexico travels that charges can be much higher en el aeropuerto. Our other saving grace is that we always take home enough pesos to get us through the first 24 hrs or so of our next trip. That way if the machines are out of cash or charging too much, we've got a buffer until we find pesos. | ------------------------
