This afternoon, in the bay in front of our house here in La Manz, a banana boat collided with a kayak piloted by Brenda Dempsey.
The boat towing the banana was going at a high rate of speed, altered course, and hit Brenda's kayak amidships.
The operator of the speed boat did not stop. Brenda was able to jump free of the kayak just in time, but the collision was so close she could feel the boat graze past her head.
She said the boat operator saw her In the water, but still did not stop. She was finally helped to shore by a lifeguard and another man. She was shaken but not injured, luckily.
These boats are not operating with a spotter, which is a highly dangerous practice, illegal in most countries. This collision could have easily been fatal, as the speed boat hit the kayak exactly where Brenda was sitting.
