For visits to places inland, you would probably find Comala more interesting. Just 7 kilometers north of Colima, it has good restaurants and lies almost under the shadow of the most active volcano in México (which one can tour with a guide). El Volcán de Fuego has been very active recently and is impressive even at rest. The tour company run by B&B owners Jupiter and his wife also can provide horse rides in the countryside and visits to coffee plantations. Comala has been called El Pueblo Blanco for its all-white buildings with red-tile roofs. There is a factory and crafts school a few blocks south of the plaza that is worth visiting. The town is also known for its ponches, which are sold in stores that line one side of the plaza. They come in many flavors and are really inexpensive. If you were to stay overnight, it might be worth a quick trip to El Centro de Colima as well, the capital of Colima State. The Centro has many great examples of the neoclassic style built during the rule of Porfirio Díaz.
