Material Donations

As suggested by Lisa, I am starting a new thread on this topic, hoping that it can be used to exchange information on needed material suppies that could be brought to La Manzanilla by those coming down over the next little while. This would include: WHAT IS NEEDED Given that the biggest need right now is for construction materials, there is a limit as to what could be brought down by plane or car. As someone earlier pointed out, maybe cash is best. Someone down there right now may have a better sense of this. Regardless, there is little point bringing things down that have no known recipient. WHAT CAN BE BROUGHT DOWN Keep in mind that airlines have restrictions on what is allowed for humanitarian aid goods. For example, tools may needto be new and in original packaging. Items brought by car may have customs implications. SCHOOL SUPPLIES Lacking ideas for things to bring? Schools always need supplies and equipment, and lists of needs are available. Nobody has reported on the condition of schools after the hurricane, but one might assume there are new needs. Remember that schools receive very limited government funding.

Shade will be at a premium with all those trees gone. I have rolls of awning fabric (Sunbrella weight and quality) It is in rolls on cardboard cores, in total it weighs 84 pounds. Is it worth packing up, and bringing as extra baggage? I think so, but need advice on this, as there will be a bit of a hassle wrapping it, getting it to and from the airports, etc. If it is a go, I would donate it to a business that needs very long wearing umbrellas or awnings....I think it lasts longer than the fabric that is used to renew the beach umbrellas every year. What do you think? Is it best to bring this, as extra baggage, given the time and expense factor, or better to donate money and have the umbrellas made with locally available fabric. Or, is anyone driving down from Vancouver who would take this in their vehicle?

You need to check with your airline. Westjet, for example, takes humanitarian goods subject to normal wieght and size restrictions. A bolt of fabric will be subject to oversize and overweight charges. Then you would have to take it somewhere here to have it made into something. | ------------------------Re: Material Donations

Hola Carol. It costs $350 pesos to get an umbrella cover made here in LM. I don't know the cost for other uses. Sunbrella is the best material and unavailable here on the coast. I would love some myself and between an 84 lb man or a roll I would go for the roll, especially a nice cobalt blue one. However, I don't know if anyone else would concur with me as $350 pesos is still a hefty sum. For awnings I think it would be great and the price, your contribution, might make it right.
