chincungua virus

just before the hurricane hit, i contracted this virus... spent 3 weeks recovering, but at this point, i understand what they say when they say it brings dolor de huesos... i can barely move in the mornings, each step is a challenge, i cant lift a coffee pot... and my bones hurt!!! i am surprised that there is nothing on the message board about this, as i met many mexicans who told me they had this as well. there seems to be no remedies on the websites, as it is a fairly new arrival to the western world... so... i am looking for information, i am approaching one month with this incapacitating illness... thanks bonnie | ------------------------Re: chincungua virus

Hey Bonnie, Joe was in LAManz in Aug and picked up this virus. He is three months with it, and is just now beginning to be pain free. There seems to be nothing to do once you get it, Advil for the pain, and rest. He has found that if you exert yourself you will feel extra discomfort in that part of your body. That is, swimming really hurt his shoulders, playing golf got his shoulders and feet...etc. it is a virus carried by day time mosquitos, so bug repellant is important. Our entire family will be with us for Xmas, including a new born, so we are preparing with a supply of bug repellant and warnings to everyone. This is much the same as past break outs of dengue fever, it is the tropics, and this stuff happens. On a positive note, unlike dengue, it appears you can only get this one time....then you have an immunity. Wishing you a speedy recovery! | ------------------------Re: chincungua virus

I don't know if I had this or dengue in August, but I think the treatment, such as it is, is much the same. Dra Marta gave me a vitamin B-complex shot in each butt cheek, and I drank lots of electrolytes and gallons of carambolas(sp?) water. In a week I was on a plane to LA for vacation. I hope this helps. | ------------------------Re: chincungua virus

I went to the hospital in Manzanillo last week and was diagnosed with chikungunya. It is a mosquito-carried virus, from Africa. There is no vaccine or direct medication. I am being treated with anti-inflammatories and pain meds. Doctor told me to expect a 5 month recovery period as I did not obtain medical care promptly. Internet has lots of info on this virus. I feel lucky that I can finally get my shoes on and get out of chair without help! Hope you can get some relief | ------------------------Re: chincungua virus

Oh, so sorry to hear this is going around. I wonder if Papaya leaf juice would work? There are quite a few links if you google: chikungunya papaya leaf juice When we had that epidemic of dengue 2 years ago, some people tried it, and thought it helped. Search this message board archives to read what people were saying about it. I remember Mari Cruz, the juice lady, said she would try putting leaves through her juicer, as it is quite difficult to get much juice out of a papaya leaf! Bonnie, let me know if you want to try it - and I will get some over to you.. It's very bitter, though, so be warned!

By the way, there seem to be different ways to spell the name of the virus - this is how I Googled it: chikungunya | ------------------------Re: chincungua virus

Jane - I've heard of this treatment for denque, so would be interested if the same treatment works for this awful stuff. Drinking star fruit juice is also good for repelling the dengue Mosquito. They make it fresh and sell it at the marisco place next to the car wash between Barra and Melaque. | ------------------------Re: chincungua virus

That is probably why La Huerta sprays from a tank in the bed of their offical truck at least twice a week. Are they doing it in town or only in outlying areas. | ------------------------Re: chincungua virus

So one of our employees got stung by a bee the other night - her hand swelled up like Mickey Mouse hands. She went to Dr. Martha and was told since she was stung she cannot get the Chinkungua virus - might be Mexican folklore but we thought it was interesting and it made me appreciate the annoying bee sting I got a few weeks ago!! | ------------------------Re: chincungua virus

I've stepped on three bees and six wasps since the summer, most recently three days ago, so maybe I should keep going barefoot? | ------------------------
